The Wendigo
The creature lends its name to the controversial modern medical term Wendigo psychosis , described by psychiatrists as a cultural syndrome with symptoms such as an intense craving for human flesh and a fear of becoming a cannibal. [ 4 ] In some indigenous communities , environmental destruction and insatiable greed are also seen as a manifestation of Wendigo psychosis. [ 5 ]
Algonquin mytholog
The wendigo is part of the traditional belief system of several Algonquian tribes of the northeastern United States and Canada, most notably the Ojibwa and Saulteaux , the Cree , the Naskapi , and the Innu . [ 6 ] Although descriptions of the creature vary, it is common across all cultures to describe wendigos as malevolent, man-eating, and possessing great spiritual power ( manitu ). They are strongly associated with winter, the north, cold, famine , and starvation .
At the same time, wendigos are personifications of gluttony , greed, and excess: they are not satisfied with killing and consuming a single person; they constantly seek out new victims, as their hunger is never satisfied. In some legends, humans overcome by greed can even become wendigos. Thus, the wendigo myth also aims to promote cooperation and moderation.
Among the Ojibwa, Cree, Naskapi, and Innu, wendigos are described as giants, often larger than humans, a characteristic absent from the myths of other Algonquin peoples . When a wendigo completely devours a person, its stature will grow in proportion to the flesh it has consumed, so it will never be satisfied. Thus, the wendigo is described as simultaneously gluttonous and emaciated by starvation .

In all cultures where the wendigo myth is present, there is a belief that humans can become this monster if they ever practice cannibalism or are possessed by the demonic spirit of a wendigo, often during a dream. Once the transformation occurs, the person becomes violent and obsessed with consuming human flesh. The most common cause of transformation into a wendigo is that the person has resorted to cannibalism, devouring the body of another person in order to avoid starvation during a period of great need, for example, during the harsh, cold winters.
Among the Algonquins, cannibalism is considered a serious taboo , even when practiced to save one's own life; in their beliefs, suicide or resignation to death is more accepted as a solution to extreme hunger. In a way, the wendigo myth functions as a deterrent and a warning against cannibalism: those who practice it risk becoming this monster.
Among the Assiniboine , Cree , and Ojibwa , a satirical dance was performed in times of great famine to reinforce the taboo against the wendigo. This ceremonial dance, known to the Ojibwa as wiindigookaanzhimowin , is now performed as part of the final day of the Sun Dance and includes the wearing of a mask and backward dancing to the beat of a drum.
The wendigo myth has been frequently used in literature , film and television . One of the earliest works of fiction was the 1910 short story The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood , in which it appears as a being feared by the indigenous people of the North American forests, an eater of moss rather than humans. In this story it personifies the atavistic call of nature, the animal that every man carries within. The writer August Derleth , from the circle of H. P. Lovecraft and his Cthulhu Mythos , associates the wendigo with the Arctic god Ithaqua . In the 1984 book Pet Sematary by American Stephen King , the wendigo is mentioned as the entity responsible for the curse prevailing in the Micmac burial ground that causes anyone buried there, whether animal or human, to come back to life as an evil being who likes to murder and mentally torture his victims. Although key to the novel, the character is never explicitly mentioned in the 1989 film version of the novel. The character is also the subject of the American horror film Cold Shoulder . [ 8 ] The concept of the wendigo is central to the film Ravenous about starving settlers in the Old West. The short story Blackwood: Skin and Bones by freelance writer Jaume Vicent also uses the wendigo as an antagonist and central thread.

It is mentioned in the novel The Signal by Maxime Chattam. In Spain, fantasy and science fiction author Javier Torras de Ugarte published an interpretation of the myth in 2017, which he came across through Blackwood's story. In "Christmas Night or The Wendigo" (2017), Torras de Ugarte presents the main characteristics of the legend, transferred to a current story of psychological terror. In the children's series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Wendigos appear as equine spirits that are attracted by enmity, conflict, and mistrust, covering everything in their path with snow and ice; only friendship and love can drive them away.
On November 14, 2018 , Fallout 76 was released . This post-apocalyptic video game is set in West Virginia in 2102. Wendigos are a mythical cannibalistic monster native to the forests of Appalachia in North America. They are terrifying humanoid creatures that lurk in the lush forests of the region. Wendigos are born from a person who practices cannibalism, this person deteriorates as they consume more human flesh, to the point where they become a Wendigo, and possess dizzying speed, sharp claws and an insatiable appetite for fresh meat, turning them into a creature worthy of nightmares. By 2103, some Wendigos had mutated into gigantic and dangerous creatures known as Colossi, characterized by measuring several meters tall and having three heads.
In cryptozoology , the legend of the wendigo is often associated with it as a variant or relative of Bigfoot.
