Spice of Life: Valheim Reforged

This mod is a complete rewrite of Txni's Spice of Life: Valheim Edition, updated for the latest versions of Minecraft. The project is in beta, bugs are to be expected as development goes on. Because this mod is not a fork of the original, some features may be missing or behave differently. Here is an updated description for the mod, adapted from the original:

A better food system for Minecraft

Spice of Life: Valheim Reforged completely overhauls Minecraft's food meter to work like a proper survival game, taking after Valheim's food slot system. Like in Valheim, food lasts for a set amount of time, and provides you with health and regeneration until the timer runs out.

While not required, it is highly recommended to install a food addon like Farmer's Delight.

Why use this mod?

Minecraft's food system is inherently unbalanced. As more food items have been added, and became easy to obtain and farm, hunger has become just an annoyance. When your only goal is to keep the meter full enough to sprint (e.g. chugging a stack of bread), the problem can be solved 30 seconds after creating a new world by planting sweetberries or punching a few animals. The only benefit to better foods is eating less often (and regenerating more in combat), but you can get a steady supply of endgame foods in a few hours with farms.

Other mods, like previous Spice of Life editions, attempt to fix this problem by giving the player rewards or punishments for not maintaining a diverse diet. This is layering an extra system on top of the food meter, which most players ignore and continue chugging bread, or find ways to game the system.

In Minecraft Alpha, there was no hunger bar, and you would eat food to heal hearts when you got low. Spice of Life: Valheim Reforged essentially replicates this, with a more modern take. Like in Valheim, you have three food slots which you must fill. Eating a food item will fill a slot, giving you the benefits of increased health and regeneration until it runs out. You then cannot eat that food again until the timer runs out (or almost runs out).

You will start with three hearts (configurable), and you must eat food to increase that, up to an entire extra bar of hearts if you eat healthy modded foods from Farmer's Delight and other mods. Eating healthy food will also increase your regen speed (also configurable). You can see these stats when hovering over a food item, and when you eat it, it will appear above your hotbar with a timer.

This pretty simple system ends up balancing many unrelated aspects of the game. You must plan when to eat and what foods to eat instead of just chugging bread. Survival is more difficult, since you don't start with full hearts, and must eat good food to build up your durability. Combat is harder, since you won't regenerate hearts for a few seconds after taking damage (though you can still eat Golden Apples whenever you want). Farming and cooking is more rewarding, since you can no longer get by with mediocre foods, and must craft good meals.

Also, baking cake is actually useful for once, providing direct healing—thus bypassing the regeneration cooldown.

Lastly, you can reset your latest eaten foods by vomiting, which you can trigger by eating rotten flesh:

Configuration

Many aspects of the mod are configurable: you can adjust the food duration, regeneration cooldown, and more.

Tools for modpacks

This mod comes with several tools for modpack devs, helping adjust the values of individual foods using tags entries:

• Give cake-like blocks healing properties when consumed:
🏷️ sol_valheim_reforged:sliceable_food (item tag + block tag)

• Minimize (nerf) properties of a food item:
🏷️ sol_valheim_reforged:low_nutrients (item tag)

• Maximize (buff) properties of a food item:
🏷️ sol_valheim_reforged:high_nutrients (item tag)

• Make a food item always edible:
🏷️ sol_valheim_reforged:always_edible (item tag)

Q&A

Q: Why is the mod lacking features X, Y and Z from the original?
A: This project is not a fork from Txni's mod. It might look and feel like it, but it's a separate project with its own features, pros and cons. I'll try to improve it as development goes on.

Q: What are the differences between Txni's version and yours?
A: There are a few, such as how regeneration and max health are handled, or the reworked base formulas. Most notably, in this version, there is no speed debuff when the player has all three hunger slots empty, players can always sprint regardless of their nutrition level. Likewise, there is no speed boost when the player is fully fed—which I found more logical.

Q: Why should I use this mod and not the original?
A: You shouldn't, except if you play the latest Minecraft releases or you need specific config options that the original doesn't have.

Compatibilty

Food items: This mod supports all vanilla and modded foods, with extra integration for Farmer's Delight and Tinkers Construct.

Mods: Unlike Txni's version, this mod doesn't prevent the food bar from rendering—it only hides it. Therefore, this mod is incompatible with mods that affect this part of the HUD—like AppleSkin. Since vanilla food and saturation are ignored anyway, AppleSkin has no functional purpose, so I've marked it as incompatible on the mod page for clarity.

Resource packs: For the same reasons explained above, resource packs that modify the hunger bar might break the HUD. Luckily, you can easily fix this by placing the mod's resources above your texture pack in the list.

Dependencies

This mod has no dependencies.

Installation

Add the .jar mod file into your mods folder.

Alternatively, you can browse the CurseForge launcher for the mod (if it doesn't show up, try typing the autor's name). Once found, click "Install" to add it to your modpack.
