Overview
Postmortem is a mod that Overhauls Minecraft's Death Mechanics, inspired by Requiem.
Upon Joining the world, you'll be given a choice, sign a contract, or choose not to. By signing the Contract of Soul-Shattering, you will become a Ghost upon Death, able to Possess Undead mobs [Mobs Listed Below].
The benefit of this is that you'll always stay near where you died, so you'll never have to deal with walking back to your items! Just find a suitable host, pick up your items, and continue on your merry way.
However, these Undead Hosts have downsides. Most burn in the sun unless wearing a helmet of some sort, have less health than a living player, cannot regain health normally, and cannot sprint or swim. Once you're ready to revive yourself, you can eat a Golden Apple (As a Zombie-type Host), or a Refleshing Apple (As a Skeleton-type Host) to cure yourself. However, this will not break your contract.
If you tire of the contract you've signed, you can break it with a Totem of Rebirth, although the process to get one is long and complex. First, you must find an Ancient Dagger, a powerful weapon somewhere between a Netherite Axe and Sword, as rare loot in an Ancient City. Next, you must use the Dagger to kill an Evoker, who will drop a Cracked Totem of Rebirth. Finally, you must insert a Cleansed Diamond (obtained also as rare loot in the Ancient City OR with an expensive recipe requiring nether items) into the Cracked Totem, Fixing it. Once you've repaired it, you can then right-click the Totem (In your own, living body only!) to Break the Contract!
Of course, if you disregard the contract in the beginning and toss it away, you can always obtain a new one via Woodland Mansion loot. There's also another, goofier use for the item, although I'll leave that to you to investigate.
